Day 1. Ferrol – Pontedeume

The first day puts us right back into the Camino mode, it’s a long stage, some guides break it in two short ones. It starts raining some time around noon and this almost immaterial thin mist of a rain comes and goes for the whole afternoon. Good to be prepared.

We generally see quite a bit of ruin and abandoned stuff along the way. Decaying buildings are both here and there. It would have maybe been charming, had it not been quite so many. One thing stands out for me and will probably haunt me forever – I didn’t take a picture, and maybe it’s for the best – somewhere past Nede, in an otherwise charming village street, there’s a long since neglected house, its window shutters and doors hanging loose. Inside – complete chaos and dust and dirt, but behind it, still clothes hanging in a wardrobe, pictures in frames on a little table, like, somebody’s life just suddenly stopped there and there was nobody to decide what to do with the sad little remains of what it was centered around… Truly sad picture.

It’s a long and exhausting day, fuelled by a small empanada at lunch and some galician seafood tapas , in Pontedeume.

Now, this is a town I can relate to. Narrow streets, lots of people, everybody who is not out to meet somebody are busy trying to feed those who are out, life is great, food is great.

I don’t think you should be allowed to be this happy over a simple dessert:

Let’s try to get some sleep now. Maybe I’ll remember something else tomorrow and write it down, but now, buenos noches.
